I lead engineering across the front end and the back end: design systems, foundations, and the surfaces people only notice when they break. Fifteen years of it, starting in geospatial software and ending up responsible for how a few hundred million people search for a job.

Breaking up the front-end monolith
Drove an eighteen-month initiative to decompose the legacy monolith that every page was assembled and deployed through. Its modules moved out into standalone servers, and its page shell was replaced with native Next.js layouts. That removed the single point of failure every team's release queued behind, cut the JavaScript shipped to the browser, and lowered CDN cost by serving fewer files and caching more of them. The architecture belonged to three staff engineers; the job was to back them, unblock them and carry the adoption work across the product teams.
The site header, as a micro-service
Migrated the site header out of a centralised monolith into a micro-service that supports server-side rendering and client hydration for any Next.js app that calls it. It was the largest module in that monolith, and by the end of the cycle it was live or in QA on apps serving more than half the site's traffic.
A next-generation design system
Oversaw the design system and component library, and got it to WCAG 2.0 AA in three months. The team automated the Figma design-token pipeline behind it, generating SVG sprites directly from the Figma API rather than maintaining them by hand, and shipped tokens and icons out of that one pipeline to web, iOS and Android. Later co-authored a contribution model that set out who owned which components, after ownership had blurred across teams.
React Express to Next.js
Led the migration from a homegrown React Express server onto the latest Next.js, then made React 18 and Next 14 available to product teams and opened the path off the pages router onto the app router.
Product analytics taxonomy
Stood up a new product analytics taxonomy and the pipeline underneath it, and launched the site teams browsed it through. Partnered with the data team across the company-wide analytics migration it fed, then argued for retiring the custom taxonomy editor once a stronger single source of truth existed elsewhere. It had done its job, and cost more to keep than to replace.
Email templates, rebuilt
Set up new infrastructure for the company's email templates from scratch, replacing an ageing renderer, and handed the system to the notifications team once it was running.
Notifications, replatformed
Took over the notifications team mid-replatform and took ownership of its roadmap, running a multi-day off-site that framed the next year of work around a person's career lifecycle rather than message volume. Sat on more than ten interview panels to staff it with five engineers.
Two teams, and the engineers to staff them
Hired and onboarded six contract engineers into the front-end foundations team inside a single cycle, running the interviews for them. That made room to lead two teams at once (front-end foundations, and search and navigation), fourteen people between them.
Post-incident review, across the front end
Led the post-incident reviews for the front-end teams, including a site outage traced to a deploy of the old monolith, and owned the follow-up work each one produced.
Front-end standards for a new B2B product
Established the technical standards from scratch, and ran a TypeScript pilot for the wider engineering organisation.
Survey response, through Slack
Increased survey response rates by 234% with a Slack integration.

ThreatConnect
Promoted from Senior UX Engineer to Director of User Experience, where building the team mattered as much as building the product. An Angular codebase, which is what the Adventures in Angular panellist run below came out of.

Tripled the front-end team
Grew the team from two engineers to six while growing its diversity, and established the design team alongside it. The diversity was a result of the method: partnered with recruiting to replace ad-hoc hiring with a deliberate process, designed to reduce bias at the offer stage rather than hope for it.
A design system, and the component library that realised it
Built ThreatConnect's first design system and hired the team that made it real: the company's first in-house designer to lead it, and two design engineers to turn it into a component library of well-structured, well-designed components rather than a grab-bag of widgets. Shipped within the year, into a new product and the key areas of the existing one, with accessibility considered from the start.
One release a year to four
Helped restructure the engineering and product process so releases went from annual to quarterly.

A browser extension for threat analysts. It scans the page in a sandbox, sends what it finds to a cloud threat-intelligence service, and marks the indicators of compromise in place, then lets the analyst run a response against them without leaving the tab. The two grants divide that loop between them: one covers the scanning and detection, the other the orchestrated response.
