I have run into your problem, but as Aaron said, non-Wordpress mf2 are often the best available. I try an mf2 feed if it exists. If it turns out looking badly, I’ll switch to the RSS, but I have so many mf2 feeds that DO look good, that I keep that as my default. I also prefer JSON Feed to RSS as that seems to look better as well.
